Jumpers and Coats for Dachshunds: Equafleece Review
As we are approaching the changing of seasons and with the weather starting to turn, I thought it was a good time to discuss the topic of jumpers and coats that are suitable for the sausage dog body.
Over the years we have tried a few different jumpers and coats for our boy, however found that many off the rack items in standard pet shops tend to be too short in length of the body for dachshunds, or the jumpers have legs built into the design that are too long.
Having spoken to a few dachshund owners, we found that Equafleece (originally a brand that started out making coats for horses) is a really popular brand for sausage dog suitable clothing, as they offer their main jumper and coat products with dachshund specific sizing, so we decided to give them a try.
The pricing is slightly more expensive than some pet shop items, and if your puppy or dog is still growing you may wish to wait until they are fully grown before investing, or look to purchase their first couple of Equafleece second hand.
While our boy was still a puppy, we initially tried the Equafleece Polo Neck Coat which comes in a 16 and 18 Dachsie specific size.
The Polo Neck Coat is easy to slip over the head of the dog and then has a buckle on the side which secures the coat under the belly.
Once he had outgrown this coat, we decided to try the Equafleece Dachsie Jumper next which is a completely dachshund specific version of their standard Dog Jumper, offering leg holes rather than sleeves to better fit the sausage dog body. As we prefer to walk our dachshund on a harness we felt that it would be easier to fit a harness over the top of the jumper as the buckle on the coat would sometimes be a bit difficult to fit with the harness over it. They offer this in nine different sizes suitable for dachshunds, meaning that weather you have a tiny mini through to a much larger dachshund, there should be something to suit your dog. They provide guidance on the website on how to measure your dog to get the right fit, with the online size guide suggesting the best fit. However if the measurements don’t quite match to a given size, you can also contact their team who will provide advice on the best product to purchase.
Both the Polo Neck Coat and the Dacshie Jumper come in an array of brightly coloured fleece options. All of the Equafleece products are made from a Polartec® fleece which is water resistant, keeping the dog nice and dry in wet weather, but also breathable too.
We have found that these fleeces definitely live up to the hype, and we have returned to the brand year after year as our dachshund has grown to ensure he is well protected for the wet winter weather. As many dachshund owners will know, sausage dogs hate the rain and our dog also feels the cold, so having a good quality jumper we can take him out in during bad weather is essential.
