Dog Friendly Walks in Kent: White Cliffs of Dover

Living in the South East of England, in Kent, we are lucky to have access to so many wonderful places to walk our dachshund right on our doorstep. One of our favourite places for a long walk is the White Cliffs of Dover, which is a beautiful coastal site managed by the National Trust, where you can take in the towering chalk cliffs, stunning views of the English channel and surrounding countryside, all while being a dog friendly place to walk.

The White Cliffs of Dover provide a fantastic opportunity for you and your dog to embark on an adventure together, exploring the rugged coastal paths along the Saxon Shore Way, peaceful meadows, and even Victorian landmarks such as the South Foreland Lighthouse, which you can find at one end of the walk.

Dogs are welcome in all outdoor spaces at The White Cliffs and South Foreland Lighthouse, with water bowls, dog bins and dog-friendly walks available. The cafés and shops available are unfortunately not dog friendly inside (other than assistance dogs) but there is outside seating available.

There's also no shortage of scenic walking trails to choose from, catering to various fitness levels and preferences. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike, you and your dog can experience the awe-inspiring beauty of this location at your own pace.

As you explore the cliffs, you'll encounter an array of wildlife, including a variety of seabirds, ground nesting birds, cattle and Exmoor ponies. The countryside in this area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), with livestock used to sustainably manage the chalk downland at White Cliffs.

While enjoying your walk, it's important to be a responsible dog owner and adhere to the National Trust’s Canine Code guidelines. Remember to keep your furry friend on a lead where signage indicates, to protect nesting birds, and keep to the paths to protect the chalk cliffs from damage, so that everyone can enjoy the landscape. It's also vital to clean up after your dog and keep them under control to respect the environment and other visitors.

So, if you're seeking an experience that embraces the beauty of nature while allowing your dog to join in the fun, plan a visit to the dog-friendly White Cliffs of Dover. This iconic destination in Kent promises an unforgettable walk with stunning views for both you and your dog.
